Why would you devote a whole summer to reading Stephen King?
Stephen King is my favorite author. I discovered him when I was just 10 years old and he has remained the most influential writer of my life. But, because his reputation is (rightfully) so associated with horror, most middle-aged women (like me!) steer clear. Because they don’t want to be scared, they’re missing out on some of the best stories ever written. I want more women to read Stephen King and understand why his stories are pop culture classics.
I also firmly believe that we will eventually study King in literature in the same way we study Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens. I am a Stephen King evangelist.
Wait, you keep mentioning “women.” Is Stephen King Summer only for those who identify as women?
No! But the lovely people who follow my podcast and social media challenges are 98% female, so I’m just speaking to that general audience. All are welcome in Secret Stuff and Stephen King Summer.
What if I really really really hate being scared?
Here’s the thing about Stephen King: not all of his work is scary. Even those labeled as horror (his debut novel Carrie, for instance) aren’t actually scary. I promise! Still, I do want to accommodate more sensitive readers.
If you can’t handle the fear factor, I will note which books or movies to steer clear of.
Tell me one more time why I should join Stephen King Summer?
Stephen King has published over 60 novels, 5 nonfiction books, and has written approximately (that we know of) 200 short stories.
His books have sold over 350 MILLION COPIES.
He’s also responsible for these iconic characters and moments:
Jack Nicholson improvising “Heeeeeeere’s Johnny” in The Shining
Sissy Spacek drenched in blood in Carrie
Nine-year-old Drew Barrymore in Firestarter
Kathy Bates as a deranged fan in Misery
The Clown in IT
and so much more…
